Student Behavior Expectations

In order to maintain a library environment which supports the Dickens LMC community's educational, emotional, and recreational needs, the following patron conduct is expected:

  •  Theft in any form will not be tolerated.
  • Because of the potentially disastrous effects on costly books, audio-visual equipment and computers, eating, drinking, or gum chewing is not permissible in the library media center.
  • Students must be in the media center with an instructional purpose (including recreational reading). The media center is not a place for misbehaving students.
  •  Computer and Internet usage must be in accordance with the student’s signed Network Access Agreement (AUP) and LMC permission form on file.
  • Books and other LMC materials are to be treated with respect and care.
  • All patrons will clean up after themselves. Put periodicals and magazines in their places, place unwanted books in the appropriate receptacles, and remove any trash or other items that does not belong in the library.
  • Unless a student is using the LMC with his or her teacher, the student must have a library pass.
  • Students will sign in for all media center visits unless they are part of a scheduled class.

Overdue or Lost/Damaged Materials Policy

  •  Overdue notices will be delivered to students in sealed envelopes to protect privacy as stipulated by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL). A weekly report of fines will also be printed and posted outside of the LMC entrance. (To protect student privacy, only ID numbers will be listed.)
  • Students with significantly overdue books will lose borrowing privileges.  Privileges will be restored when overdue books are returned or fines have been paid. Loan periods are subject to change depending on patron's on-time turn-in record.
  • Students must pay for lost books or books damaged beyond repair regardless of if the fine was initiated at Dickens Elementary School. If the fine remains unpaid, student high school diplomas will be withheld until the account is settled.

Lost and Damaged Materials

Students can keep track of LMC materials by keeping them in safe places at school and at home. Doing so will avoid lost materials--and will ensure other patrons can use the items for years to come.

Students and their parents or guardians shall be responsible for all damage to or loss of textbooks, library books, or other materials, equipment, or school property loaned to or used by the student, and shall reimburse the Clark County School District for such loss or damage.

The library media specialist shall be responsible for collecting the full purchase price of any such item that is lost, destroyed, or so damaged as to make the item unfit for future use.

Fines may also be assessed for limited damage that results from abuse or neglect on the part of the student. In no case should a fine exceed 25% of the full purchase of the item. For additional information, see CCSD Regulation 5134 and NRS 393.170.

Progressive Fine Management Policy

First Week on Fine List:           Conference with media specialist

Second Week on Fine List:       Student will call his or her parent

Third Week on Fine List:           Detention

Fourth Week on Fine List:        Conference with principal or assistant principal

If a student is unable to pay a fine, the responsibility rests with the student to make arrangements to pay off the debt by working in the media center before or after school for $2.00 per hour in 30-minute increments.

Restriction of Library Media Center Privileges

The Dickens Elementary School LMC reserves the right to restrict, suspend, or revoke library privileges according the judgment of the LMC library media specialist. The following situations serve as examples of when such action might be taken: numerous lost or damaged materials, chronic overdue materials, theft or attempted theft of materials, and/or other extreme cases.

Copyright Policy

In support of the school’s educational mission, the Dickens LMC provides access to computers and informational services under the pretense that all patrons will strictly adhere to the laws governing copyrighted material in the educational environment. More detailed guidelines are provided in the Appendix.

Specifically, we remind patrons in general that:

  •  A photograph may be used in a single project for a single use.
  •  A sound of 30 seconds may be incorporated into a single project for single use.
  •  A movie of three minutes or less may be incorporated into a single project for a single use.
  • Words, if in quotation marks, of up to 1000 words (or 10% of the original work), may be incorporated into as single project for single use.

Patrons shall consult the library media specialist for additional guidelines or further clarification.
